Pro Ventum International, a leading wind developing company from Germany and GE are jointly developing a 90 MW wind farm called Thep Sathit in the Chaiyaphum territory of Thailand located about 250 km north east of the capital city Bangkok.
GE, which is looking for a possible equity investment in the company, has signed an MOU with the company to supply 36 numbers of 2.5 MW wind turbines required for the wind farm. For both GE and Pro Ventum the wind farm venture will be the first project in Thailand and will be one of the biggest projects handled by GE in Thailand as well as in the ASEAN stretch. Currently Thailand is planning to broaden its power generation range with the inclusion of wind energy and looking forward to decrease its reliance on alien sourced fossil fuel.
Dr Wannarat Charnnukul, Thailand’s Minister of energy, said that the proposed project is the result of Thai government’s intention to support green energy. He added that his country is aiming to achieve 20% power generation from renewable energy sources by the year 2020.
Kovit Kantapasara, Country executive for GE Energy explained how the multiyear incentives offered by Thai government helps the investors, in wind energy development. He added that the signed MOU clearly depicts how long-term policies of the government helps in stirring the expansion of power generation through renewable energy sources.
