Vattenfall Installs the Biggest Offshore Wind Farm Off Kent

The Thanet Offshore Wind Farm, the biggest offshore wind farm located off the coast of Kent is all set to begin its operations. The offshore wind farm situated about 12 km away from the Foreness Point close to Ramsgate will be inaugurated by Chris Huhne, the Energy Secretary on 23rd of this month. Øystein Løseth, President of Vattenfall, the company that developed the project will grace the occasion.

The offshore wind farm incorporates 100 Vestas V90 wind turbines, standing at 115 meters at their maximum height to produce 300 MW of clean energy to provide electricity to 200,000 houses for lighting and heating purposes. Vattenfall commenced the construction work of this £800 million offshore wind energy development farm during 2008 and completed the installation of the last turbine during June 2010. The wind farm set in water depths measuring 20 to 25 m and covering a total area of around 35 sq.km will augment the offshore wind generation capability of the country by nearly 30%.

David Hodkinson, Vattenfall’s Director and Head of Development, called the offshore development a landmark occasion for the company and expressed his thanks to the District Council of Thanet, Thanet College and residents of the district for the support extended. He added that his company will utilize the derived experience from its Thanet project for use in its future offshore installations cost effectively and safely.
