General Electric, a world-wide known clean energy company, has officially commenced its wind turbine production facility in Nomura-Hai Phong Industrial Zone in Vietnam. GE had made its first investment in the country in 1993 when the US government lifted its trade restrictions. The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Viet Nam has signed a partnership accord with GE for the construction of the factory.
The Hai Phong wind turbine factory started with an investment of US$61 million is spread over an area of 8.4ha. The factory will initially produce components required for the wind turbines. The manufactured components will be shipped to the production facilities of GE located all over the world. The factory will initially manufacture 1.5 MW wind turbines and has the installed capability to produce around 1,500 turbines a year. The factory will provide around 400 jobs to the local people.
John Krenicki, GE Energy’s Vice Chairman and CEO, called Viet Nam as the perfect place for investing and expanding the facility with special mention on its work force and growing opportunities available in the renewable energy sector. He added that the demand for electric power, fossil fuel and clean water continues to rise all over the world and called GE’s investment in wind energy sector of Viet Nam as productive. Tran Tuan Anh, Viet Nam’s Industry and Trade’s Deputy Minister wanted GE to increase its operations by producing the other components required for a wind turbine. He added that the depleting fossil energy sources make renewable wind energy an obvious choice for energy production and energy security.
