Doyon has announced its intention to construct a micro-hydroelectric plant in the Denali National Park and Reserve. The plant will help to power the park’s roadhouse owned by the Fairbanks Native Corporations. The roadhouse is currently powered using a diesel generator. Doyon has planned to build the project on Eureka Creek located near the roadhouse.
The planned micro-hydroelectric project will include a power plant with a capacity of 50 kW, a water-carrying pipeline, and an impoundment dam. The pipeline will be laid for about 4,600 feet, with diameter of 18 inches. The estimated cost of the project is $500,000. Doyon intends to begin the construction by next summer.
The hydroelectric project will be able to fulfill half of the electricity need of the roadhouse, at the time of peak operation. This will save the consumption of diesel by few thousands of gallons each year.
