Technip to Evaluate Vertical-Axis Offshore Floating Wind Turbine Prototype

Technip in collaboration with EDF Energies nouvelles, Nénuphar and Converteam is establishing the Vertiwind project to evaluate a pre-industrial prototype of a vertical-axis offshore floating wind turbine. The other collaborators of the project are IFP Energies nouvelles, Bureau Veritas, Seal Engineering, Oceanide, ISITV and Arts et Métiers.

The Vertiwind concept breaks the limitations associated with the installation of fixed wind turbines. It will change the perception for offshore wind farms in a number of countries mainly in the United States, the Mediterranean basin and in Europe.

Technip is accountable for the dynamic electrical connection cable, floater’s design, turbine integration, mooring system and on-site deployment. The Sea Cluster of the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region has labeled the Vertiwind project. The project is one of the first recipients of the program ‘Investing for the Future’, a part of the ‘Grand Emprunt’, which is funded by the French Prime Minister via the French Environment and Energy Management Agency.

Technip has proved its pioneering role in floating offshore wind turbines by designing, producing and deploying Hywind, the first commercial size floating wind turbine for Statoil in Norway.
