Adoption of Energy-Efficient Lighting Can Stimulate Job Growth in Michigan

The Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance organized a workshop for Michigan-based building operators and owners from both public and private sectors to advocate the use and benefits of light emitting diodes (LEDs) in conserving energy and improving performance.

The participants of the workshop were apprised of the potential LEDs and other energy-efficient lighting possess to save energy and subsequently lower lighting expenditure for factories, businesses and residences. The United States Department of Energy estimates a reduction of 46% in energy consumption for lighting vis-à-vis the consumption in 2010 by deploying LED lighting.

The growth of the solid-state lighting market will not only be accompanied by energy savings benefits but will also offer a fillip to the job market in Michigan. New energy-efficient lighting technology will create more jobs. The Michigan Solid-State Lighting Association that is a collaboration of 29 companies engaged in the manufacture and distribution of LEDs is set to initiate the growth in LED manufacturing in the United States.

Steve Bakkal, Director of Michigan Energy Office, spoke about the effect of energy-efficient lighting technology on the state of Michigan and quoted the example of Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids that has achieved annual savings of $170,000 on retrofitting the hospital’s parking garage with LED.

The Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance is a joint network that promotes energy efficiency in the Midwest to support environmental preservation and sustainable economic development. Technical Information Network for Solid-State Lighting of the U.S. Department of Energy supported in organizing the workshop.
