Ripasso Energy was founded in 2008 by Gunnar Larsson, former CEO of Kockums AB. The ambition was to further develop the unparalleled ability of the Stirling engine to convert heat energy to electricity, and to put this technology to commercial use. The vision of the company was to establish the Stirling engine as the best option for local production of sustainable and climate-smart electricity. Ripasso Energy has an exclusive and eternal licence for the world-leading Kockums Stirling technology and has since its founding continued to further improve upon it.
During its first years, the company focused on developing the Stirling engine to be used with solar energy. In 2012, the construction of a reference and testing facility was initiated in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa. In May the same year, the Ripasso Energy Stirling engine demonstrated an efficiency of 32 % when converting solar energy to grid-quality electricity, claiming the unofficial world record. This number is close to twice that of competing technologies.
In 2016, the company launched a hybridised Stirling engine where solar energy can be combined with the combustion of some fuel to heat the engine. This makes demand-driven electricity generation possible, allowing for power to be produced when the customer needs it rather than only when the sun is available. The hybridisation technology is exclusive to Ripasso Energy and in March 2017, the company applied for patent protection.
In September 2017, Ripasso Energy launched its next product – PWR BLOK 400-F. It is a container-based solution in which Stirling engines are used to harness energy from flare and industrial residual gas combustion. The product has the same effect on the climate as 100 percent renewable electricity to the record-low price of $21.7 per MWh and results in a significant contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions.
