Rare earth metals (REM) used in energy-conservation efforts is expected to become scarce by 2015. Dysprosium and neodymium, which are REMs, are considered as “key enablers” of green technologies. Scientists in Norway are attempting to extract REMs from scrap.

In an effort to boost recycling of plastics, the Scottish government is offering loans to recyclers. A £2.5m loan scheme has been set up by the government. The Scottish Enterprise and Zero Waste Scotland are to administer the loan scheme.

The use of cleaner fuel while berthing in the waters of Hong Kong will make ocean-going vessels (OGVs) entitled to a 50% reduction in port facility and light dues. The initiative focusing on the eligibility of OGVs is effective from September 26, 2012. This is a three-year incentive program.

Ascent Solar Technologies, a provider of advanced flexible thin-film photovoltaic modules, has reported the retail debut of its EnerPlex solar assisted battery case for use in iPhone 4 and 4S through its distributor, CommXPERTS. The EnerPlex will be available in the US and in all the regions of North America.
A new study has found that in order to encourage eco-friendly behavior consumers need to be carefully nudged along. They may not be inclined to do so if they were told to follow a certain practice. Encouraging voluntary commitment may induce them to change their behavior.

The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) is participating in a global research project to assess the effect of dumping chemical munitions into the Baltic Sea. It has been estimated that after the Second World War, around 50,000 t of chemical munitions were dumped into sites at the Bornholm, the Little Belt strait, the Gotland Deep, and approximately 117,000 t in the Skagerrak strait and probably at the Gdansk Deep.
