Iberdrola Renewables, a division of Iberdrola Renovables global group, has planned to construct a wind energy project in the Perquimans and Pasquotank Counties in the northeastern part of North Carolina. The company has submitted an application with the North Carolina Utilities to materialize the proposed plan.
The Desert Wind Power Project, if constructed, will be based at Elizabeth City and will be built on 20,000 acres of private land. The plan is to build a 300 MW project that will be sufficient to power approximately 55,000 to 70,000 households in North Carolina. The project will also bring in significant economic benefits to the region.
Iberdrola Renewables has been conducting a number of researches on the proposed project and has been collaborating with federal and state agencies and local communities since 2009. If the filing, which marks the initial step towards the development of the project is approved, then construction could begin in 2011 itself.
According to Governor Bev Perdue, fostering the state’s green economy will improve the economic future of North Carolina and Iberdrola’s proposed project represents a first step towards realizing this goal.
Construction is anticipated to generate more than 400 jobs and less than 2% of the agricultural land will be taken out in view of the project’s small footprint.
