Northrop Grumman Achieves Greenhouse Gas Reduction Goal Before Planned Time

Northrop Grumman Corporation has achieved its inaugural greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goal of 25 percent in three years, two years ahead of plan. In 2012, the company realized a 25.3 percent GHG intensity reduction from its 2008 baseline, resulting in a 26.9 percent absolute emissions reduction.

"We take our commitment to environmental sustainability seriously, and are very proud of the early success in achieving our GHG reduction goal," said Wes Bush, chairman, chief executive officer and president. "Environmental sustainability principles align with our performance objectives and make good business sense. This success provides a solid foundation for the next steps in our sustainability efforts."

The emissions reductions were achieved through a balanced strategy, led by the company's greeNG environmental sustainability program. The primary drivers include facilities, engineering and manufacturing efficiency projects, a comprehensive green information technology strategy and real estate portfolio optimization, with additional benefits realized through renewable energy and ecosystem conservation.

In addition to GHG, the company also tracks solid waste generation and water use, and is on track to achieve its best management practice objectives in this area.

Northrop Grumman has recently also received significant recognition for its environmental achievements, including:

  • The 2012 Cool Planet Award from The Climate Registry for excellence in energy efficiency in the aerospace and defense category.
  • Named by the Carbon Disclosure Project to the Carbon Performance Leadership Index, the top 10 percent of participating companies for exemplary performance related to climate change mitigation, adaptation and transparency.
  • Identified as a leader in the Maplecroft Climate Innovation Indexes, ranking 30th of 360 publicly listed companies.
