Sustainability Forum to Encourage Dialogue with Stakeholders

BASF - The Chemical Company - is Official Partner of the "Germany and China - Moving Ahead Together" initiative in Chongqing, southwest China. A BASF Pavilion focusing on sustainable urbanization will be open to the public at the Germany Esplanade in the city's central square from May 9 to 17, 2008. In addition, BASF is sponsoring a forum at Chongqing University at which stakeholders are invited to share their ideas about a sustainable future for Chongqing.

Chongqing, the largest of China’s four provincial-level municipalities with over 30 million residents, is the second station of the “Germany and China” initiative, which started in Nanjing in October last year. The Germany Esplanade is touring major cities in China to promote technological, scientific and cultural aspects of Germany and to strengthen the partnership between the two countries.

“As a company with a strong commitment to China as well as sustainable development, BASF takes great pride in its role as Official Partner of ‘Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together’,” said Dr. Martin Brudermüller, member of the Board of BASF SE responsible for Asia Pacific. “Western China is modernizing rapidly, and Chongqing is leading the way with its remarkably fast growth and development. As The Chemical Company, we can help make this development sustainable by providing innovative solutions.”

Following its great success in Nanjing with over 50,000 visitors, BASF has enhanced its Pavilion to feature even more sustainable solutions and products. “We are very pleased to invite the residents of Chongqing to our Pavilion to see, and even feel, how energy efficiency and environmental awareness can go hand in hand with a modern urban lifestyle,” said Johnny Kwan, Chairman of the BASF Greater China Country Board. In the “Low-Energy Apartment,” visitors will be able to learn about exterior insulation and finishing systems that are both energy efficient and flexible in design. They will also be able to feel how an innovative window foil helps to stop sunlight from heating up a room, or smell the difference made by a low-solvent, eco-friendly interior paint.

In the area of sustainable solutions for the automotive industry, BASF shows how its products help to make cars more environmentally friendly with exhibits such as emission-control catalysts, water-based coatings and low-weight, heat-resistant plastics that cut fuel consumption and help to improve engine performance. Finally, BASF is continuing its important education initiative Kids’ Lab in Chongqing. Children between 6 and 12 years are invited to discover the world of natural science and learn about the importance of environmental protection through specially designed experiments.
