OSRAM PURITEC Uses Ultraviolet Light to Purify Water

At the EXPO Zaragoza 2008 in the German Pavilion, OSRAM presents PURITEC, an innovative product for water purification. In accordance with the motto "Water and sustainable development", the regulated water cycle plays an important role in the German exhibition concept and contributes to one of the most important aspects of sustainability – the sensitive treatment of the Earth's water resources which are becoming ever more scarce. From 14 June to 14 September, visitors can see this technology for themselves.

The PURITEC technology exhibited by OSRAM is an innovative disinfection method for the purification of water using ultraviolet light, in which a special immersion emitter is fitted into water containers such as freshwater tanks and cisterns. A daily run-time of only 30 minutes per 100 litres is sufficient for the physical sterilisation of the water and to ensure its long-term storability. OSRAM technology can be used anywhere in the world, also for private use, and presents an environmentally friendly and innovative alternative to water purification with chemicals.

A unique water experience awaits visitors in the German Pavilion with a 120-m long round trip on board rafts. This trip emulates the water cycle, from the subterranean caverns of the groundwater to the labyrinth of service pipes in a futuristically equipped private home. Natural filtration systems are described, the taking of water samples are illustrated and procedures used to clean wastewater are explained.

In addition, visitors have the opportunity to test OSRAM's innovative water purification system for themselves. The water purification process can be started with the switch of a button and then observed.
“For OSRAM, participation in EXPO Zaragoza 2008 is an ideal opportunity to demonstrate our commitment and dedication to environmental protection to an international audience. We hope to influence the visitors’ opinions of sustainability even further and show them that environmental protection doesn’t have to be too complicated. After all, chemical-free water purification from PURITEC technology can easily and efficiently be used in private homes, too”, explained Hans Jürgen Streppel, OSRAM Director Marketing Ultraviolet and Infrared.
