The Italian Artist Hoping to Restore Coral Reefs Worldwide| Falling Walls Science Summit, 6–9 Nov 2025, Berlin

What if art could help heal our oceans? With Coral Sonic Resilience, Berlin-based artist Marco Barotti has created 3D-printed, solar-powered sculptures that emit the sounds of thriving coral reefs into degraded ecosystems. The result: fish and larvae are drawn back, giving damaged reefs a chance to regenerate.

Made from calcium carbonate — the very substance corals are built of — and inspired by the textures of brain corals, the sculptures are now installed in reef nurseries in the Maldives. On 9 November in Berlin, he will be honoured as a Science Breakthrough of the Year and present his work to an international audience at the Falling Walls Science Summit — one of the leading global gatherings on science and society.
