Loblaw Launches "Bring it, Be green" Campaign

Loblaw Companies Limited has launched a new green initiative, "Bring it, Be green" campaign in an effort to encourage its customers in Atlantic Canada to go green. The company is already providing free plastic bags and will continue to do so. Through this new campaign, Loblaw will give away one cent back to the customers for each reusable bin or bag utilized for purchases at Save Easy, Atlantic Superstores and Dominion (Labrador and NL) locations.

The program is displayed at signage in the stores to remind customers to utilize reusable bins and bags. The company will continue to provide 50 PC(R) points for each reusable bin or bag to customers who make use of their bank card or President's Choice Financial(R) MasterCard(R) for purchases. In case the customers forget to bring a reusable bag, they are provided with an option to buy PC(R) G.R.E.E.N(TM) reusable bin. The customer can return this bin to the store and get a refund.

Senior Vice President, Atlantic Market, Loblaw Companies Limited, Phil McNeill, said the company is equally committed as its customers to the environment and to significantly reduce the plastic bags distributed from its stores. The company’s Atlantic Canada customers have given it a feedback on ways to reduce the use of plastic shopping bags and the company is pleased to implement it and make a positive impact on the environment, McNeill said.

In 2009, Loblaw has averted one billion bags from landfill sites and achieved its national target. Citizens in Atlantic Canada have reduced their usage of plastic shopping bags by 62%, which helped to reach this target. A target of 55% set by Loblaw to reduce the use of plastic shopping bags has been surpassed by this achievement. The Atlantic Canadians drew praise from WWF- Canada for their efforts to reduce the use of plastic bags.
