Apple® today announced two new programs aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of its manufacturing partners in China. The programs will avoid over 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas pollution in the country between now and 2020, equivalent to taking nearly 4 million passenger vehicles off the road for one year.

DOE Awards Stony Brook Researchers $1 Million Grant to Improve RCCI Combustion Technology

A Stony Brook University-led research team has received a $1 million grant from the Department of Energy (DOE) to conduct research on Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI), an emerging combustion technology which has the potential to simultaneously reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Research will focus on utilizing onboard fuel reformation to eliminate the need for two different fuels to enable RCCI.

NREL's Comfort Suite Reveals Connection Between Human Comfort and Energy Systems

On a typical early fall morning in Golden, Colorado, the temperature outside was about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Tucked inside a unique structure at the Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), two volunteers felt considerably cooler than that, but would soon be pushed past the outdoor conditions. The volunteers were participating in an experiment inside NREL's newly constructed Comfort Suite (C-Suite) designed to reveal the connection between human comfort and energy systems.

Researchers Break 17-Year-Old Solar Hydrogen Production Efficiency Record

Solar energy is abundantly available globally, but unfortunately not constantly and not everywhere. One especially interesting solution for storing this energy is artificial photosynthesis. This is what every leaf can do, namely converting sunlight to chemical energy. That can take place with artificial systems based on semiconductors as well. These use the electrical power that sunlight creates in individual semiconductor components to split water into oxygen and hydrogen.
