OCAS, a company with expertise in radar technology and installation of aviation warning systems, declared that the solution installed by the company at the Talbot Wind Energy Project near Chatham, Ontario is fully functional.
The solution was installed as a result of a contract received from Renewable Energy Systems Canada (RES Canada) Construction LP an associate of RES America for the 98.9 MW wind project utilizing 43 Siemens turbines.
The solution provided by the company incorporates a patented radar system, placed at the top of select wind turbine towers to monitor and notice the approach of an aircraft over the wind farm. When such approach is detected the system will immediately trigger the turbine aviation strobe lights to provide visual warning to the aircrafts as needed by Transport Canada. The light is kept in off condition till an aircraft borders on the wind farm region. The system is designed to deliver audio warning to the VHS system of the aircraft if the visual warning is ignored by the air plane.
Unlike normal light warning installations the OCAS systems keeps the lights off until it detects an aircraft in the line of wind turbine thus reducing the ecological impact of a wind project while assuring the safety for the approaching air planes. The system provided by the company is the only Aircraft Detection System (ADS) tested and approved by Transport Canada.
