Gentian Secures $1.6 Million Pre-Seed Investment to Scale AI Biodiversity Monitoring

Gentian, a tech startup specializing in biodiversity monitoring through AI, announced today that it has raised a total of USD $1.6 million in funding, an oversubscription of its first major fundraising effort. This funding comes on the heels of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, a critical time when the global community is grappling with the urgent need for climate resilience and sustainability.

Gentian's breakthrough in biodiversity monitoring aligns with the global agenda set forth at COP28, emphasizing the vital role of innovative technologies in combating climate change. By securing this investment, Gentian is poised to contribute to the global effort to preserve biodiversity, an essential component of ecological balance and climate health.

Employing state-of-the-art deep learning methods, Gentian uses AI to convert high-resolution imagery from urban and rural landscapes into comprehensive, actionable insights. This includes detailed assessments of habitat types, urban vegetation, and potential enhancement areas, as well as a multitude of other features essential for grasping and monitoring our impact on the natural world.

Gentian’s latest funding effort was secured from a range of investors, including global sustainability-focused organizations, innovation accelerators and venture capital firms. The largest investor was Ecolab, a global leader in water, hygiene, and infection prevention, who was joined by Techstars, Blu Venture Investors, gener8tor, PAX Momentum, and Undivided Ventures.

Alexander Bent, Managing Partner at Undivided Ventures, emphasized the importance of scalable solutions like Gentian's in building a resilient urban future amid climate change, adding “we’ve sought scalable solutions that align with Undivided's vision of a resilient urban future in the face of climate adversity. Gentian embodies this vision, and we're committed to championing their growth."

“With the support of our investors, we are poised to make a significant contribution to global sustainability efforts,” said Gentian CEO Dan White. “Our remote sensing AI delivers environmental intelligence that accelerates ecosystem restoration and resilience. As COP28 comes to an end, we are reminded of the urgency of our mission and the potential of our technology to make a real difference.”
