Calpine has established a number of natural gas fired power plants for the generation of clean electricity. Some of these plants include the Baytown Energy Center, Bethpage Power Plant, Carville Energy Center, Deer Park Energy Center and Creed Energy Center.
The Baytown Energy Center is a power plant that covers about 24 acres of land. This plant, established by Calpine, comprises three steam generators for the purpose of heat recovery as well as three combustion turbines for higher generation of electricity. Established in June 2002, this natural gas fired power plant has been fulfilling all of the energy (electricity and steam) needs of the Bayer Corporation and will continue to do so under its contract until 2022.
The base load capacity of this power plant operated by Calpine is about 742 megawatts. However, the base load capacity with peaking is 830 megawatts. Apart from natural gas firing, the technology used in the Baytown Energy Center is that of combined cycle cogeneration. This power plant utilizes turbines manufactured by international companies such as Siemens and Toshiba. A part of the electricity generation by this plant is also supplied to the ERCOT wholesale merchant market.
