Almost four million people die each year from household air pollution (HAP) caused by exposure to the combustion of biomass fuels (wood, charcoal, crop residues, and dung), kerosene, or coal. These individuals are among the tens of millions who rely on such products to cook their meals, heat their rooms, and light their homes.

This is precisely what the EU funded research project CAPS, is attempting to do with waste sludge from the paper industry. CDTi and Pirelli Partner to Market Emission Control Products for Gasoline and Diesel Applications

Pirelli & C. Ambiente SpA and Clean Diesel Technologies, Inc. today announced the signing of an agreement to form a joint venture company to market and sell emissions control products for both gasoline and diesel applications in Europe and the CIS countries. The new joint venture company, Eco Emission Enterprise Srl, will be located in Milan, Italy, and is expected to begin operations in March 2013.

Chemists at the University of Burgos (Spain) have manufactured a sheet that changes colour in the presence of water contaminated with mercury. The results can be seen with the naked eye but when photographing the membrane with a mobile phone the concentration of this extremely toxic metal can be quantified.

Clouds Formed in Polluted Airmasses May Reflect More Incoming Sunlight and Cool the Planet

Researchers at Columbia Engineering and Georgia Institute of Technology have published a study in the online Early Edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) showing—for the first time—that certain volatile organic gases can promote cloud formation in a way never considered before by atmospheric scientists. The study will be published the week of February 4, 2013.
