UMass Amherst Scientist to Use Advanced Monitoring Methods to Assess Health Risk from Air Pollution

Launching a natural research experiment in Kathmandu, Nepal, this month using advanced monitoring methods to assess health risk from air pollution, environmental health scientist Rick Peltier at the University of Massachusetts Amherst hopes to demonstrate for the first time in a real-world setting that air pollution can and should be regulated based on toxicology variables rather than simply on the volume of particles in the air.

Georgia Power Reports Successful ‘Renew Our Rivers’ Volunteer Campaign in 2013

Georgia Power announced today the results of its annual Renew Our Rivers volunteer campaign, a program which organizes cleanup events on waterways and lakes near the company's generation facilities throughout the state. During 2013, approximately 2,000 Georgia Power employees coordinated or participated in 22 local cleanup events and removed more than 100,000 pounds of litter and debris from rivers and surrounding lakes.

NPL Leads European Consortium to Develop New Methane Measurement Instruments

Narcotics Substances and Drugs Traced in Wastewater from Swedish Sewage Treatment Plants

Chemists at Umeå University in Sweden have been able to trace narcotics substances and prescription drugs in measurements of wastewater from 33 Swedish sewage treatment plants. Cocaine, amphetamine, and methamphetamine, in measurable concentrations, were found in a total of half of the locations.

Gasmet FTIR Gas Analysers Help Test More Plants, More Quickly in Germany

Power generation from Germany’s enormous biogas industry produces emissions to air that are regulated by the Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control (TA Luft). As part of the approval process, the emissions from each plant have to be tested every three years. Formaldehyde is one of the pollutants of greatest concern because of its carcinogenicity and the TA Luft emission limit is 60 mg/m³.
