Panel Oversupply is a Boon for Long Term Adoption of Solar Energy

The current oversupply of solar modules which is putting tremendous pressure on the industry and its financial backers has led to a generally negative view of the solar industry. However, according to Dr. Harry A. Atwater, Director of the Resnick Sustainability Institute at Caltech, while the current oversupply of silicon solar panels is painful in the short term, it is a boon for long term adoption of solar energy. This viewpoint was shared during this week’s VX 2013 Conference in Los Angeles.

ABB to Upgrade Celilo HVDC Converter Station in Oregon

ABB, a global leader in power and automation technology, has won an order worth around $260 million from the U.S. utility Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), a power marketing agency within the U.S. Department of Energy, to upgrade the existing Celilo HVDC (high-voltage direct current) converter station in Oregon. This station is an important part of the electricity link between the Pacific Northwest and southern California commissioned more than 40 years ago in 1970. The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2012.

New Hydrothermal Liquefaction Process Can Produce Crude Bio-Oil from All Biomasses

A new generation of the HTL process can convert all kinds of biomasses to crude bio-oil, which is sufficiently similar to fossil crude oil that a simple thermal upgrade and existing refinery technology can be employed to subsequently obtain all the liquid fuels we know today. What is more, the HTL process only consumes approximately 10-15 percent of the energy in the feedstock biomass, yielding an energy efficiency of 85-90 percent.
