Vac Aero Completes Lean and Green Plant Renovation

VAC AERO's Oakville Thermal Processing Division recently completed an extensive plant re-organization based on lean and green manufacturing concepts. The project included building renovations to create more production space, the addition of new work-handling and production capacity, safety enhancements and energy efficiency improvements in lighting and power consumption. Lean manufacturing techniques that were implemented in the re-organization included Kanban systems, 5S and visual signals.

Steel Packaging Recycling Rates Exceed Plastic, Cartons and Glass in Europe

The latest figures from APEAL (the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging) show that 70% of steel packaging is recycled in Europe. This represents over 2.5 million tonnes of food and drinks cans and other steel containers being recycled in 2008, saving 3.9 million tonnes of CO2. According to the latest available data, this places recycling rates for steel above those of other packaging materials such as plastic, beverage cartons and glass (29% , 33% and 62% respectively).

National Biodiesel Board Releases Study on the Significance of Biodiesel Tax Incentive

A study conducted by John M. Urbanchuk, a well-known economic analyst was released on 8 December, 2009 by the National Biodiesel Board (NBB). This study highlighted the economic influence of the biodiesel industry and it also focused on the negative impact on the industry if the biodiesel tax credit is allowed to lapse. December 31, 2009 is the allotted date for the expiry of the biodiesel tax incentive.

Solar PV Project of the Year for Ground Mount Award for SunEdison and SkyPower

The leading solar association in Canada, CanSIA presented the “Solar PV Project of the Year for Ground Mount” award to SunEdison and SkyPower. SunEdison, a subsidiary unit of MEMC Electronic materials, shares a partnership with SkyPower. This award was given for the establishment of the largest solar energy park in Ontario known as the First Solar Energy Park in Stone Mills, which is capable of generating 9.1-megawatt of electricity. The award was presented by the Honorable George Smitherman, Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of Ontario.
