Carbon Nanotube-Based Coating Reduces Fuel Consumption for Ships

The Norwegian company Advanced Marine Coatings based in Gamle Fredrikstad specializes in the development of environmentally compatible, heavy-duty anti-corrosion coatings for sea-going vessels. The "Green Ocean Coating Heavy Duty" coatings are formulated with Baytubes® carbon nanotubes (CNT) from Bayer MaterialScience, which gives them very high abrasion resistance. The coatings also reduce the flow resistance between the ship's hull and the water, thereby enabling a significant reduction in fuel consumption.

Using the Motion of Cars and Planes to Generate Electricity

A group of researchers at the City College of New York is developing a new way to generate power for planes and automobiles based on materials known as piezoelectrics, which convert the kinetic energy of motion into electricity. The prize recognises the best European new media production (web, promotional video etc.) involving science and engineering/technology. Idle Cropland Could be Used to Grow Biofuel Precursor

A USDOE and USDA study concluded that 50 million U.S. acres of cropland, idle cropland, and cropland pasture could be converted from current uses to the production of perennial grasses, such as switchgrass, from which biomass could be harvested for use as a biofuel feedstock. Economically viable production of a perennial grass monoculture from which substantial quantities of biomass are removed annually is expected to require nitrogen fertilizer.

Novel Wind Farm Design Inspired by Schooling Fish

Robert Whittlesey and John Dabiri of the California Institute of Technology have developed a potentially more efficient wind farm design that maximizes the efficiency of land usage. New-strategy to Produce Eco-friendly Plastics using Polylactic Acid

Scientists from the South Korean University have successfully invented a new strategy of developing polymers used for making plastics through bioengineering, and thus doing away with the usual method of using chemicals from fossil fuels. A research on this invention, which is expected to promote the usage of eco-friendly plastics, is published in the Bioengineering and Biotechnology journal, to mark the journal’s golden anniversary.
