Redondo Beach Unified School District to Save Millions with 1.6 MW Solar Energy Project

In November 2012 the voters of Redondo Beach passed Bond Measure Q which included funding for a district wide 1.6 Mega Watt solar energy project. The solar system will offset 70% of energy used by the schools, reducing the District's electricity bills, and consumption from Edison, totaling approximately $15 Million in savings over 25 years.

Additionally, the solar project will create cleaner air for students and the community by reducing 16,172 tons of carbon pollution over the next 25 years—which is equivalent to taking 2,890 cars off the road or planting 24,540 trees, as well as 25,000 pounds of Sulfur Dioxide and 23,670 pounds of Nitrous Oxide

Board President, Laura Emdee said, "RBUSD is always looking for cost savings and we encourage every student to be mindful of the environment. This Solar project will save RBUSD millions while serving as a good Environmental Science example for our students and community."

PsomasFMG, LLC was chosen to design, build and operate the photovoltaic system on 12 District schools. "We are very excited to be working with such a forward thinking District," said Alex Smith, PsomasFMG VP. "The savings on energy costs that that the District will see can go directly back to the District.

The project is currently in the design and engineering phase. To celebrate this exciting clean-energy initiative, the District plans to hold a groundbreaking event to honor the start of construction, October 29th, 10 a.m. at Lincoln Elementary School. Systems are projected to be fully operational in the Spring of 2014.
