Vivint Solar Honored with 2013 Sustainable Business Award

Vivint Solar, the second largest U.S. residential solar provider, today announced that it has been awarded a 2013 Sustainable Business award from Utah Business magazine.

The award, which was presented at a reception at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City on Nov. 12, honors the best sustainable business practices and efforts in the state and recognizes companies that are making strides in environmental sustainability.

"As electricity bills continue to consume a greater share of household income, Vivint Solar is committed to offering homeowners a long-term and affordable electricity option," said Greg Butterfield, CEO of Vivint Solar. "After only two years of operation, we are proud to have become a leader in residential solar. We will continue to expand our presence and offerings to provide a clean solar energy choice to homeowners."

Since its launch in 2011, Vivint Solar has become the second largest U.S. residential solar installer, according to the U.S. PV Leaderboard published by GTM Research. In addition to increasing its workforce to over 900 employees, it added key executives such as CEO Greg Butterfield and Executive Vice President of Capital Markets, Thomas Plagemann. Last month, the company announced additional solar funding of $540 million.

Vivint Solar's innovation in energy management technology took a giant step forward this year with a groundbreaking achievement. Partnering with Garbett Homes, Vivint, Inc. and Vivint Solar helped create the first net-zero climate 5 production home, called the Zero Home—the first solar-powered smart home that produces as much energy as it consumes in cold, dry climate zones similar to Utah's (one of the most difficult to achieve a net-zero rating).

Vivint Solar currently operates in California, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Washington D.C.

Vivint Solar customers save money on energy through the company's power purchase agreement (PPA), in which customers agree to purchase the power the solar energy system generates at a rate that is lower than their utility's current rate. In exchange, Vivint Solar designs, installs and maintains the system for no additional cost, allowing customers to enjoy the benefits of renewable solar energy without a large, up-front investment.
