When three friends could not find a great cup of coffee on Kelleys Island, Ohio, they decided to open the Erie Island Coffee Co. Their goal was to take espresso drinks to a new level. Through their determination and passion, the three owners created a whole new breed of coffee without a trace of bitterness and a delightful hint of chocolate and sweetness through an amazing blend of five artisan-roasted beans.
The friends created a unique shop as well. Illuminating Erie Island’s open single-level customer space, which includes a kitchen and seating area with central fireplace, is a tricky proposition. The coffee shop features full- and half-story windows, as well as a skylight that floods the interior with natural light. Such an environment demands plenty from an interior lighting system. And, one of the major enhancements at Erie Island’s location in Rocky River, Ohio involved the replacement of incandescent lighting.
After careful consideration of various options, the Rocky River coffee shop selected energy-saving EarthBulb LED’s from EarthTronics Inc. EarthBulb LED’s from EarthTronics Inc. located in Muskegon, Michigan, have been successfully used in many applications found in commercial buildings, hotels, restaurants, retail stores and residential homes.
“By switching out halogens with energy-efficient EarthBulbs from EarthTronics, we save over 80 percent on energy costs as compared to the previous floodlights,” said Martin Reuben, Erie Island co-owner. “The new lamps create a bright clean interior that complements natural light and perfectly illuminates the space at night. In addition, these lights burn cooler to positively impact our air-conditioning usage, and their long performance life means that we don’t have to constantly change bulbs.”
From halogen to LED throughout
Erie Island’s lighting makeover encompassed both recessed down lighting and track lighting. Each of the new LED lamps features an aesthetically pleasing single-chip design with an advanced cooling system to ensure performance for as many as 40,000 hours.
The coffee shop replaced existing halogen lamps with 15-watt PAR30 EarthBulb LED floodlights and 6-watt MR16 and GU10 LED miniature lamps. The EarthBulb LEDs provide 3000K white light and high color rendering. In addition, the EarthBulb’s dimming technology enables Erie Island to smoothly dim the lamps to less than 5 percent on standard controls.
EarthBulb LED’s deliver a brighter, longer-lasting light that have paid for this project within six months while delivering a balanced, even lighting that operates cooler than the previously installed lights. As a result, Erie Island has lowered its energy bills, while its customers enjoy a great cup of coffee in a very warm and pleasant environment.
