Canadian Government Announces Over $1.4 Million in Funding for Science Initiatives Under Clean Air Regulatory Agenda

Today, on Clean Air Day, Minister Aglukkaq announced more than $1.4 million in funding for science initiatives under the Clean Air Regulatory Agenda. In all, seven universities will receive funding for 13 projects that will contribute to the body of knowledge for effective action to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The Clean Air Regulatory Agenda was established in 2006 to support Government of Canada efforts to improve the environment and health of Canadians by reducing GHG and air pollutant emissions. Its objectives are achieved through funding for science, reporting, policy analysis, regulatory development, and action to improve indoor air quality.

• In 2011, the Government of Canada committed $600.8 million dollars over five years towards the renewal of the Clean Air Regulatory Agenda.
• Since 2006, the Government of Canada has also invested $235 million in domestic adaptation initiatives to improve our understanding of climate change and help Canadians plan for climate impacts.
• In September 2011, Canada's air quality was ranked second out of 38 countries by the World Health Organization.
• Since 1990, Canada's emissions of key air pollutants have decreased considerably, some by more than half.
• The Government of Canada's approach to climate change is focused on delivering environmental and economic benefits for all Canadians.
• As a result of collective action by governments, consumers and businesses, Canada's 2020 GHG emissions are projected to be 128 Mt lower relative to a scenario with no action.
• Emissions per capita (tonnes per person) have also been decreasing since 2005, and this is also projected to continue to 2030.
