Environmental Protection in China Worth Billions

According to a new technical market research report, THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION MARKET IN CHINA (MST033B) from BCC Research, the global market for environmental protection products and equipment in China is expected to be worth $13.4 billion in 2008.

This will increase to over $34.3 billion in 2013, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.7%.

The market is broken down into segments for products and equipment that address air pollution, water pollution and municipal solid waste pollution. Of these, products and equipment for water pollution have the largest share of the market, worth an estimated $6.5 billion in 2008. This should increase to $16.8 billion in 2013, for a CAGR of 21.0%.

Products and equipment for air pollution control have the second largest market share, worth an estimated $6.1 billion in 2008 and $15.4 billion in 2013, for a CAGR of 20.5%.

The third largest segment, municipal solid waste pollution products and equipment, was estimated at $860.0 million in 2008. This should increase at a CAGR of 20.5% to reach $2.2 billion in 2013.

In recent decades, China has achieved rapid economic growth, industrialization, and urbanization. Annual increases in gross domestic product of 8.0% to 9.0% have lifted some 400 million people out of dire poverty. Although technological change, urbanization, and China’s high savings rate suggest that continued rapid growth is feasible, the resources that such growth demands and the environmental pressures it brings have raised grave concerns about the long-term sustainability and hidden costs of growth. Many of these concerns are associated with the impacts of air and water pollution.

China's domestic industry includes some strong companies, but the rest are small and don’t use the most current technology. During the eleventh Five Year Plan period (2006 to 2010), China's environmental protection and control industry offers significant potential for foreign companies.
