Rapid Growth For The Private Equity Cleantech Market

Over the course of 2009 Preqin has been building up the data and information that it holds on the cleantech private equity market and is today releasing a research report outlining some of the key findings.

Key findings include:

  • Number of funds commencing investment which include a cleantech focus quadruples between 2004 vintage (30 funds) and 2008 vintage (117 funds)
  • Number of cleantech funds which are solely focused on cleantech also grows substantially. Nine funds commenced investment in 2004 vintage, increasing to 39 in 2008 vintage
  • Future growth is certain, with a further 78 cleantech focused funds currently in market
  • Fund of funds and public pension plans are the biggest institutional backers of private equity cleantech funds
