Green Environment in Educational Setting Has Positive Impact on Students

Leading environmentalists and educational architects took part in the "Eighth International Congress on the Development of Physical Infrastructure in Education” that was held on November 25-27, 2009 in Durango, Mexico. Insituto Nacional de la Infrastructura Fisica Educativa sponsored this event.

Gaylaird Christopher, President and Principal Architect of Architecture for Education, Pasadena, California, delivered his speech as a member of the international experts in the conference. In his captivating speech, he said that in addition to green environment in educational setting being healthier, it is also aesthetically pleasing. It not only supports educational activities but also imparts better education for students, he added. Adopting green initiatives is beneficial financially, but in an educational setting the green environment impacts the community, teachers, and students at various levels, stressed Christopher.

Sustainable energy efficient practices motivate the students to excel at their activities, while stressing the importance of education. Green environment also encourages the students to actively take part in their school’s conservation initiatives, remarked Christopher. Operating the lights when needed, recycling materials and various other acts that helps to conserve energy help to stress the importance of caring for environment to students on a day-to-day basis. He further said that students have become more conscious of the environment and have more respect for all the elements in our world.

Christopher also said that strategic co-operation between designers, educators, and developers of planned communities can minimize the environmental impact by locating the institutional, commercial, and residential buildings at appropriate locations. He told the conference attendees that by designing the learning setting in an environmentally-friendly way, today’s students will strive to make the world a better place to live in the future.

This conference, which is held every year in the month of November, is attended by designers, planners and representatives of construction community from Mexico. Guests from other nations are also invited for this annual event.

This year’s conference covered many subjects such as new materials, designs with respect to spaces, furniture, construction processes, and quality learning environments.
