Duke Energy Places Order for 91 Megawatts of Additional Wind Turbines

Duke Energy has placed an order with Vestas for 91 megawatts of additional wind turbines for the first phase of its Notrees wind power project located in Ector and Winkler Counties, Texas.
The 55 wind turbines are scheduled to arrive on the western Texas site in the second half of next year and are anticipated to be in service by the end of 2008. Terms of the transaction with Vestas were not disclosed.

Norske Skog Invests in Timber-Based Biofuel

What’s brewing in Caye Drapcho’s bioreactor may well be a fuel of the future. Drapcho, a biosystems engineer at Clemson University, is investigating a bacterium that produces hydrogen. The microbe is called Thermotoga neapolitana. And it has a taste for peaches, especially rotten ones.

PG+E Receives Approval to Generate 585.5 MW of Clean Electricity

Pacific Gas and Electric Company announced today that the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has approved four new renewable energy power purchase agreements. The four renewable projects – three utility-scale solar and one geothermal – will generate 585.5 megawatts (MW) of renewable, clean electricity for PG&E’s customers in northern and central California.

Horizon Wind Energy Places Order for 242 Wind Turbines

Alcoa Commends Approval of New Vehicle Fuel Efficiency Standards

Alcoa announced today that it commends the U.S. Congress and the White House for approving new vehicle fuel efficiency standards incorporated in the energy bill. The new law requires 35 miles per gallon fuel average for new domestic vehicles, including SUVs, by 2020 a 40 percent increase from current corporate average fuel-economy (CAFE) standards.

Alcoa Announces New Renewable Energy Contract to Supply Massena Operations

Alcoa today announced it has reached an agreement with the State of New York and the New York Power Authority (NYPA) on a new, renewable energy contract to supply the Company’s Massena, NY operations that paves the way for an upgrade of the operations there. Alcoa’s Massena Operation is the largest private employer north of Syracuse, contributing nearly $350 million annually to the local economy.
