llinois-Led Research Receives $1.12 Million to Clean Agricultural Drainage Water

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has awarded $1.12 million to support University of Illinois-led research to clean agricultural drainage water through saturated buffers and denitrifying bioreactors. The investment, part of NRCS's Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) program, was matched by numerous stakeholder partners in Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota, for a total of nearly $2.25 million.

New Semiconductor Coating Could Create New Opportunities to Produce Green Fuels

Hydrogen gas and methanol for fuel cells or as raw materials for the chemicals industry, for example, could be produced more sustainably using sunlight, a new Uppsala University study shows. In this study, researchers have developed a new coating material for semiconductors that may create new opportunities to produce fuels in processes that combine direct sunlight with electricity. The study is published in Nature Communications.

That biofuels can contribute to a cleaner global energy mix is widely accepted, but the net benefits of bioenergy in terms of mitigating greenhouse gases (GHG) are moot. Dow recently announced its collaboration with Royal Umbrella and Prepack, Thai leading flexible packaging producer under SCG Packaging (SCGP), to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by optimizing plastic resin used in rice bags as well as reducing energy use in production.
