American Water Honored with ‘Visionary Award’ for New Approach to Transforming Geothermal Technology

For its innovative approach to transforming geothermal technology, American Water was recently honored with the "Visionary Award" at the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association’s (IGSHPA) annual conference in Kansas City. William Varley, senior vice president of American Water’s northeast division, and Commissioner Patricia Acampora of the New York Public Service Commission, accepted the award on behalf of their respective organizations.

Using solar or wind power to produce carbon-based fuels, which are commonly called fossil fuels, might seem like a self-defeating approach to making a greener world. But when the starting material is carbon dioxide, which can be dragged out of the air, the approach is as green as it gets. The technology that makes it economically feasible isn't available yet, but a recently published paper presents nice step forward in the effort to not just sequester CO2, but turn it into a useful fuel that is part of a carbon-neutral future.

Solar Applied Plans to Transform Urban Mining by Merging Ecology and Economy

According to the United Nations Environmental Programme, an estimated 50 million tons of electronic waste are generated around the world every year. What's more, the metal deposits found in many types of e-waste can be 40 to 50 times richer than the raw ore extracted from mines. One ton of gold ore, for example, yields 5 grams of gold, on average. However, approximately 150 grams of gold can be found in one ton of phone circuitry.
