Natural Solar Trends May Not Be Influencing Climate Change, Newly Corrected Sunspot Numbers Suggest

The Maunder Minimum, between 1645 and 1715, when sunspots were scarce and the winters harsh, strongly suggests a link between solar activity and climate change. Until now there was a general consensus that solar activity has been trending upwards over the past 300 years (since the end of the Maunder Minimum), peaking in the late 20th century -- called the Modern Grand Maximum by some.

Adult Corals Exposed to Ocean Acidification May Help Offspring Adjust to Future Climate Change

A new study from scientists at the University of Hawai'i - Mânoa's (UHM) Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) reveals that preconditioning adult corals to increased temperature and ocean acidification resulted in offspring that may be better able to handle those future environmental stressors. This rapid trans-generational acclimatization may be able to "buy time" for corals in the race against climate change.

Shoreline Hardening in the US Impacts Long-Term Management of Polar Environments

As we expand our coastal cities and armor the coast against the ravages of the sea, we lose the resiliency of the coastlines' natural defenses. Rachel Gittman and colleagues at the University of North Carolina, NOAA, and the US Coast Guard report in the August issue of ESA Frontiers that sea walls, bulkheads, breakwaters, and the like put in place to protect coastal communities harden 14 percent (22,842 km) of the tidal shoreline of the United States.

Toshiba Completes Testing 1MW-1MWh Battery Energy Storage System for Italian Transmission System Operator

Toshiba T&D Europe S.p.a. (TTDE) completed testing a 1MW-1MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Sardinia, and handed it over to the Italian Transmission System Operator, Terna S.p.a. Toshiba was the first of seven battery suppliers now installing systems in Sardinia, including Samsung SDi and Siemens, to successfully complete testing.

Integrated Sensing System Detects Temperature of Contaminating Gases Caused by Coal Waste Residues

The ECOAL-MGT project, designed to minimize the environmental problems caused by coal waste piles beside forests, has successfully been completed following tests carried out in San Pedro da Cova (Portugal). This was the conclusion expressed by the lead researchers during the final workshop held at the end of June in the Portuguese locality of Gondomar.
