The first set of wind turbines installed at the 138-MW wind farm near St. Joseph in Manitoba, Canada, has started generating power. Manitoba’s Premier, Greg Selinger, said that the project is one of the huge wind power farms in Canada and helps Manitoba to establish its position as a top player in green energy development.
Pattern Energy and Manitoba Hydro agreed on a power procurement deal for 27 years. Work carries on the remaining wind turbines at the St. Joseph wind farm, which is anticipated for full capacity production in February 2011. The 2.3-MW capacity wind turbines are mounted on towers, which have a height of 80m.
The total investment required for the St. Joseph wind farm is projected to C$345 million. Pattern Energy will also pay C$38 million in total to the landowners in the rural municipalities of Rhineland and Montcalm. The wind farm occupies an agricultural land of 125 square kilometers owned by private parties in the two municipalities.
