Eltek to Supply On-Board Chargers for New Electric Vehicles from Volvo Car

Eltek has won a supply contract from Volvo for the supply of on Board chargers for electric vehicles. According to the terms of the agreement, Eltek will be supplying water cooled on-board chargers to the Volvo Car from 2012. The Vice President of Eltek explained that their chargers will suit the hybrid vehicle line at Volvo.

The EltekEV Powercharger 3000 will be used for charging the electric vehicles at Volvo. These chargers provide 96% of power conversion efficiency. They function by generating minimum heat and take very less time for charging the battery. The consumers’ charging costs are cut down with the use of these chargers.

The technology at Eltek provides solutions that are energy efficient and the devices are light in weight and compact. The chargers can be used in high-efficiency power electronic applications used in telecom, power utilities and railways. The dimensions of the charger are 50 x 280 x 120 mm and provide an output of 3 kW. The heat generated while the charger operates is less hence a moderate cooling system is appropriate for smooth operation. The main heat generating component is the thermocouple, which is mounted against the solid aluminium outer wall. The charger is suitable for being placed in an IP housing.
