MEKO Reaches Milestone of 3,500 Trained EV Technicians

More than 3,500 vehicle technicians at MEKO have now been trained under E+, the Group's certification that equips workshops to service and repair electric vehicles. The milestone underlines MEKO's ambition to lead the way in electrification, while remaining experts in an increasingly complex car parc spanning multiple technologies, makes and models.

"More and more people are driving electric cars, and they need repairs too. We see this clearly in Norway, where the EV fleet is now starting to age. With more trained technicians in workshops such as Mekonomen, Automester and MECA, we can serve EV owners just as effectively as we serve owners of hybrids and petrol and diesel cars," says Pehr Oscarson, President and CEO of MEKO.

In January, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) published statistics from its 2025 periodic roadworthiness inspections. Among ten-year-old cars, electric cars were almost twice as likely as petrol and diesel cars to fail due to wear-related defects: 30 percent versus 16 percent. According to Statens vegvesen, one possible explanation is that owners of older electric cars are more likely to skip servicing.

MEKO has worked systematically with its E+ certification since 2021, with training delivered through MEKO Academy, among others. E+ ensures that technicians and workshops have both the right skills and the right equipment. The certification has three levels, ranging from the safe handling of electric vehicles to advanced work directly on high-voltage batteries. Today, more than 3,500 MEKO technicians have been trained in E+, of whom 1,600 have reached the second-highest level and 150 the most advanced level. Most of the trained technicians work in Denmark, Norway and Sweden – the countries where electrification has come furthest.

While EV sales are rising in several countries, the pace of electrification varies widely across Europe. In Poland and the Baltics, the share of electric cars remains very low, in sharp contrast to Norway. Across Europe as a whole, the car parc is still dominated by hybrids and conventional petrol and diesel cars.

"Electrification is here to stay, and we want to be the obvious first choice for EV owners when their cars need service and repair. But we must also meet the substantial need to service every other type of car, make and model – a need that will remain for many years to come," says Pehr Oscarson.

Background / The E+ Certification

  • Level 1 – Safe EV servicing
The technician understands the car's high-voltage system and knows how to de-energize it before service and repair, so the car can be handled without risk in the workshop.
  • Level 2 – Diagnosing faults in the electrical system
Builds deeper expertise in high-voltage batteries, charging and high-voltage systems. The technician can carry out advanced diagnostics, measurements and systematic troubleshooting. For car owners, this means a better chance of finding the root cause when, for example, charging or the high-voltage system isn't working properly.
  • Level 3 – High-voltage battery repair
The most advanced level, covering direct work on the high-voltage battery – from disassembly and diagnostics to replacing modules and cells. For car owners, this means the workshop can repair parts of the battery where technically possible, rather than treating it only as a complete unit.
