Scientists to Gather and Discuss How to Develop a Work With Less Transport Generated Emissions

Scientists, industry and authorities at home and abroad will meet on 17 and 18 March 2009 at DTU for a 2-day workshop to discuss how we get a transport sector with less CO2 emissions.

The future is near. According to the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC, the world has 10-15 years left to ensure a peak in CO2 emissions resulting in the emissions being reduced to approx. 50% of the present level ultimately by the middle of the century. At the same time we must ensure security of supply and economic growth. It is also very important that we make the world less dependent on fossil fuels. Our means of transport are almost entirely based on fossil fuels. One of the biggest challenges is the transport sector, accounting for a large proportion of the global energy consumption - in Denmark this sector accounts for around 30% of the total energy consumption.

The workshop looks at the challenge: How do we integrate the transport sector into an energy system based on renewable energy?

The workshop will assess the prospects of 4 major transport areas: Intercontinental sea transport, passenger air transport, private car transport and road based freight transport.

The workshop is to result in recommendations on what can be done. The recommendations are targeted at research institutes, private companies and public authorities. There will also be recommendations for synergistic opportunities in order to increase innovation and market progress.

The workshop will address international perspectives related to research, technology, business, regulation and administration. Participants come from companies within the transport sector, the energy sector, energy and transport research institutes, energy companies, the transport industry and the political-administrative system.

The workshop takes place on 17 – 18 March 2009 at DTU in Lyngby.
