Study Shows Significant Reduction of Environmental Impact in Egg Production Over Past 50 Years

A new study published in Poultry Science shows that while U.S. egg production has increased over the past 50 years, the industry has also been able to significantly decrease its environmental footprint. Researchers conducted a lifecycle analysis of U.S. egg production from 1960 to 2010 to evaluate environmental performance measures for the complete lifecycle from crops to hens to the farm gate.

Reduction in Empty Running of Vehicles Will Help Prevent 426,000 Tonnes of Carbon Emissions

The Centre for Sustainable Road Freight, a joint collaboration between Heriot-Watt and Cambridge Universities, claims the industry could save £160 million in fuel and prevent 426,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from being released, equivalent to the amount generated by approximately 70,000 cars a year, if they reduce empty running of vehicles.

Icelandic Deep Drilling Project Creates World's First Magma-Enhanced Geothermal System

In 2009, a borehole drilled at Krafla, northeast Iceland, as part of the Icelandic Deep Drilling Project (IDDP), unexpectedly penetrated into magma (molten rock) at only 2100 meters depth, with a temperature of 900-1000 C. The borehole, IDDP-1, was the first in a series of wells being drilled by the IDDP in Iceland in the search for high-temperature geothermal resources.
