NREL Partners With Ecopetrol to Process Fuel Ethanol from Sugar Cane and Palm Oil Residue

The Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is working with Ecopetrol, the largest oil company in Colombia, to process the residue from sugar cane and palm oil harvesting into fuel ethanol for blending with gasoline.

BASF Purchases Renewable Energy Credits Through Green Power Switch’s Pilot Program

BASF is the first business in the Chattanooga, Tennessee, metropolitan area to purchase home-grown renewable energy credits through the Green Power Switch’s large-scale purchase pilot program offered by the Electric Power Board (EPB) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Through the pilot initiative, BASF is matching its power consumption with renewable energy, while helping to build awareness and encourage others to promote the use of regional solar and low-impact hydro.

NZ MFAT Supports USAID’s Pacific Vocational Training and Education for Clean Energy Program

The United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Pacific Vocational Training and Education for Clean Energy program has received a USD $394,000-grant contribution from New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (NZ MFAT) to expand the existing two-year program in the Pacific Islands.

SK Group Invests Additional $19 M in Solar Manufacturer HelioVolt’s Expansion

Today SK Group, Korea’s third-largest conglomerate, announces an additional $19 million investment in US-based HelioVolt Corporation’s commercial expansion. HelioVolt manufactures monolithically integrated CIGS (Copper, Indium, Gallium, Selenium) modules. Founded in 2001 with a strong focus on manufacturing technology development, HelioVolt is expanding its commercialization efforts.

The California Energy Commission (CEC) has awarded Hydrogen Frontier, Inc. a $3 million grant to build a new 100 percent renewable hydrogen fueling station for fuel cell electric vehicles at Hyundai’s hydrogen energy generation and fueling station in Chino, Calif.

UC Starts New Composting Program to Utilize Dining Center Food Waste

A pilot composting program will begin at MarketPointe@Siddall dining center in fall semester, and plans call for the program to eventually be used in other UC settings. The university's Office of Sustainability, Facilities Management and Food Services have been discussing a composting strategy in recent years, and a grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency via the Hamilton County Solid Waste & Recycling District helped set things in motion.

More forms of mercury can be converted to deadly methylmercury than previously thought, according to a study published Sunday in Nature Geoscience. The discovery provides scientists with another piece of the mercury puzzle, bringing them one step closer to understanding the challenges associated with mercury cleanup.
