PPA Approval Clears Way for Solar Power Plant in New Mexico

First Solar, Inc. and New Mexico State Land Commissioner Ray Powell announced today that First Solar, Inc. has been granted a power purchase agreement (PPA) from the New Mexico Public Regulatory Commission, clearing the way for First Solar to begin construction on the state's largest solar power plant to be located on State Trust Land in Luna County. The PPA will provide El Paso Electric Power with 50MW of solar energy for 25 years.

Green Ballast Completes a Total Lighting Project for Eleven Shelby County Schools

Green Ballast Inc., announced today that it had completed a total lighting project for eleven Shelby County Schools (SCS). In addition to incorporating its patented daylight harvesting fluorescent light ballasts, Green Ballast performed a complete energy efficient lighting upgrade on the eleven schools that included new lights in the classrooms, hallways, offices and some of the gyms and auditoriums.

If you’ve been on or near the water, you’ve seen it—the plastic trash that litters oceans, lakes, and streams worldwide. But visible plastic—soda bottles, lighters, flip-flops, combs, rope—may be the least of the problem. Scientists are beginning to realize that what you can’t see, tiny bits of polyethylene or polypropylene called “microplastics,” likely pose a greater threat to marine ecosystems.

Portland General Electric Selects Abengoa for 440MW Combined Cycle Power Plant in Portland

Abengoa, a company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, has been selected by U.S. power company, Portland General Electric (PGE) to develop a 440-megawatt (MW) combined cycle power plant to supply electrical energy to half the population of Portland, Oregon. The project is valued at USD 364 million.

Stanford Scientists Create Advanced Zinc-Air Battery with High Catalytic Activity

Stanford University scientists have created an advanced zinc-air battery with higher catalytic activity and durability than similar batteries made with platinum and other costly catalysts. The results, published in the journal Nature Communications, could lead to the development of a low-cost alternative to conventional lithium-ion technology widely used today, the researchers said.

BIO Disappointed over Florida’s Repeal of Renewable Fuel Standard

The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) today expressed its disappointment that the Florida legislature passed and Gov. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) signed HB 4001, repealing the state’s Renewable Fuel Standard. The law had required that on-road transportation fuel sold in the state contain between 9 and 10 percent renewable fuel from biomass.

Thomas Swan are hoping their plans to have an Anaerobic Digester (AD) plant on the site the company has occupied since 1926 are given the green light. Designs for this safe, clean and unobtrusive way to produce low carbon sustainable energy have been submitted and local residents were given the opportunity to ask questions and voice any concerns at a ‘drop-in’ sessions in Crookhall Community Centre.
