Enzyme Could Lead to Plants that are Easier to Convert to Biofuels

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory have created a new enzyme and demonstrated its potential ability to interfere with the production of lignin, a key cell-wall component in plants. This approach to enzyme engineering, described in the January 1, 2010, issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, could be used to further understand the mechanisms of lignin biosynthesis, and may lead to the production of plants that are easier to convert to biofuels.

A-Power Energy Generation Systems has signed a definitive distributed power generation (DG) contract with Biomass Electricity, Thailand to develop a 150-megawatt biomass firing power plant in Prachinburi, Thailand. A-Power Energy Generation Systems is a rapidly growing manufacturer of wind turbines and a chief provider of distributed power generation systems in China. This biomass DG project, which started in December, is estimated to be completed within 27 months.
