Megabus.com to participate in Green Coach Certification Pilot Program

An announcement was made by megabus.com on 2 December, 2009 about its participation in the Green Coach Certification Pilot Program (GCC) developed by the University of Vermont (UVM). Megabus.com has been selected to participate in this program because they offer a cheap bus express service at only $1. This program conducted as part of a research program is scheduled for two years and is expected to provide the basis for a long-term environmental certification program for the passenger transportation sector and the motorcoach industry. Green Coach Certified ecolabels are provided to the companies participating in this program and these labels can be placed on specifically qualified vehicles projecting their benefits to the environment.

Harris Poll Reveals Sharp Reduction of Global Warming Believers

Harris Interactive has conducted an online survey of 2,303 adults, between November 2 and 11, 2009, which revealed a sharp reduction of people who believe that emission of carbon-di-oxide and other gases will lead to global warming. Two years ago, 71% of people believed that global warming is due to emission of greenhouse gases and that percentage has dropped to 51% according the poll. The poll results also reveal an increase of people from 23% to 29% who do not believe that global warming is due to carbon-di-oxide emissions since 2007.

Grameen Foundation and Oxfam America Release a Report Titled Climate Change and Microfinance

Grameen Foundation and Oxfam America have released a report that analyzes the role played by Microfinance institutions in controlling the impacts brought about by climate change on the poor people. The report titled “Climate Change and Microfinance” was written by Asif Dowla, a Professor of Economics and an expert in Microfinance from St. Mary’s College. This report highlights the most important poverty related issues that are to be discussed at the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Copenhagen next week.

Mercy Corps Helps Indonesian Slum Dwellers to Fight Against Climate Change Impacts

Mercy Corps has implemented an Indonesian Cities Project, with the support from the Urban and Regional Development Institute (URDI). This one year project has received a grant of $525,000 from the Rockefeller Foundation. Mercy corps is involved in preparing and recovering the urban slum dwellers in Indonesia from the impacts brought about by global warming. This is quite similar to the Copenhagen conference that aims in fighting against various climate change issues. This project is a part of the Asian Cities Change Resilience Network that was established by the Rockefeller Foundation.
