Boomtown’s main stage will be powered by green hydrogen powered generators – giving festival-goers a cleaner, pollution-free experience.
The 20,000-capacity Hydro XL main stage features acts including Skrillex, Groove Armada, Floating Points and Four Tet.
Sound and light at their performances will be generated by silent green HPU2™ hydrogen power units supplied by GeoPura, the UK’s largest hydrogen producer.
The units are designed to replace diesel generators and deliver the reliable, large-scale power needed for Boomtown’s main stage and wider festival infrastructure. They can be deployed at megawatt scale, while producing zero CO2, zero NOx and no particulate emissions at the point of use.
Renewable electricity is used to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis, which is stored and transported to site. The HPU2™ then uses Ballard hydrogen fuel cells to convert it back into clean electricity, with water as the only by-product.
The Hydro XL sits in the festival’s Downtown area in the former Origins footprint. It is more than twice as large as the 8,000-capacity Hydro stage which featured as a pilot at last year’s Boomtown.
This year’s festival, which starts today and runs until Sunday, has the full name Boomtown Chapter 5: Radical Redesign. The name signals a rethink of how large-scale events operate and underscores Boomtown’s commitment to sustainability by doing away with diesel generators on its main stage.
