Siemens Energy and GS E&C Hand Over Most Efficient Fossil-Fired Power Plant in Asia to South Korean Power Utility

Siemens Energy and its partner, GS Engineering & Construction (GS E&C), handed over the most efficient fossil-fired power plant in Asia to the South Korean power utility GS EPS Co. Ltd. The handover of Dangjin 3 (formerly Bugok 3) combined cycle power plant took place twelve days ahead of schedule.

Cooling of Eastern Pacific Ocean Waters Linked to Attenuation of Worldwide Temperature Increase

New research by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego climate scientists attributes the attenuation of a worldwide temperature increase to a cooling of eastern Pacific Ocean waters, one that counteracts the warming effect of greenhouse gases.

Salty Wastewater from Oil and Gas Production Made into Economical Potable Water

In the midst of an intensifying global water crisis, scientists are reporting development of a more economical way to use one form of the “ice that burns” to turn very salty wastewater from fracking and other oil and gas production methods into water for drinking and irrigation. The study on the method, which removes more than 90 percent of the salt, appears in the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering.

Bara, assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering at The University of Alabama.

NJIT Expert in Oil Spill Research Appointed to National Research Council

NJIT Professor Michel Boufadel has been appointed a member of a National Research Council (of the National Academies) committee on the Effective Daily Recovery Capacity. The appointment is through Nov. 14, 2013. The task includes providing guidelines on the best techniques for skimming oil off the ocean surface following spills. Such guidelines are important for preparedness of regions regarding oil spills.

DBL Investors, a double bottom line venture capital firm, today announced a report revealing that the California nuclear industry has received $8.21 billion in federal subsidies over the last 50 years. The report, Ask Saint Onofrio: Finding What Has Been Lost in A Tale of Two Energy Sources, compares federal subsidies for nuclear energy to those provided for distributed solar energy.
