TMS to Lead Project to Develop Materials for Improved Energy Efficiency and Reduced Carbon Emissions

The Minerals Metals & Materials Society (TMS) has been commissioned by the Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) to lead a project consisting of a two-phased study into areas where new materials and processing breakthroughs can lead to transformational advances in energy efficiency, energy security, and reductions in carbon emissions.

Biologist Samuel Hazen at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is one of more than 100 researchers who collaborated to publish this week in Nature, the entire genome of the model grass commonly known as purple false brome. Saudi Arabia Begins Construction of First Solar-Powered Water Desalination Plant in the Kingdom

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has embarked on a program to introduce solar energy into the country with the construction of its first water desalination plant that is powered by solar power. In the three-part solar program, the construction of the solar desalination plant is the first part. The goal of the program, which was launched by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), is to create stable power and water supplies in the kingdom by constructing solar-powered water desalination facilities.

Kyocera’s Multicrystalline Solar Modules Set New World Record in Module Efficiency

A new world record was set by Kyocera for achieving a module efficiency of 16.6% with efficiency for aperture area being 17.3% for its multicrystalline solar modules utilizing 54 cells in the development stage. The module design and the company’s proprietary "Back Contact" technology were further improved to achieve this world record. The refinement of the technology resulted in optimization of each cell’s performance thus increasing the total energy conversion efficiency.

Siemens Hands over Highly Efficient Ecofriendly Power Plant in Holland

Siemens Energy has handed over the Sloecentrale combined cycle power plant located in the Dutch town of Vlissingen-Oost to the joint venture of Delta Energy, Netherlands and EDF, France. The natural-gas-fired plant has a very high efficiency level of 59 percent, maximized flexibility and low nitrogen oxide emissions. It will supply more than two million Dutch households with ecofriendly electricity.

ITS Innotech Solar, a solar company based in Norway, has purchased land in Eastern Germany for developing a facility to enhance the power output of solar cells. This investment in the city of Halle from the company will provide a significant boost for the photovoltaic sector in the region. Germany Trade & Invest has assisted ITS for the land acquisition.

Canadian Solar Modules Receive High PV USA Ratings

In the last month’s PV USA (PTC) ratings, solar modules from Canadian Solar are ranked as one of the highest performing modules. The solar module series that received the highest PTC ratings are CS5A- 180M, CS5P-240M and CS6P- 220P, 225P, 230P. To measure the real-time performance and power of the solar modules, the PTC ratings are becoming increasingly accepted as universal standards.
