Westar Energy to Significantly Reduce Pollution from Its' Kansas Power Plant

Westar Energy has agreed to spend approximately $500 million to significantly reduce harmful air pollution from a Kansas power plant and pay a $3 million civil penalty, under a settlement to resolve violations of the Clean Air Act, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Justice Department announced today. As part of the settlement, Westar will also spend $6 million on environmental mitigation projects.

Innovative Campaign Sees over 125 Million Aluminum Cans being Recycled

The U.S. Conference of Mayors, Novelis Inc. and Keep America Beautiful, Inc. (KAB) announced the winners in the sixth annual Cans for Cash: City Recycling Challenge at the U.S. Conference of Mayors 78th Winter Meeting in Washington, D.C. The "Challenge" pits cities of comparable sizes in a competition of creativity and execution, offering monetary awards to the cities that conduct the most innovative campaigns and collect the most aluminum cans. During October 2009, more than 40 cities collected over 125 million used beverage cans.

Integrating 20% Wind Energy is Feasible by 2024: National Renewable Energy Laboratory Study

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) released the Eastern Wind Integration and Transmission Study (EWITS), which is a two-and-a-half year technical study that examines high-penetration wind scenarios of the future. The Eastern Wind Integration and Transmission Study was designed to analyze the operational, technical and economic implications of moving Eastern Interconnection’s electrical load amounting to 20% or more to wind energy by the year 2024.
