Optomec to Help Develop High Efficiency Fuel Cells for the Air Force

Construction of Rugby Wind Power Project Completed by Iberdrola Renewables

Construction of the 149 megawatt Rugby Wind Power Project near Rugby, North Dakota has been completed by Iberdrola Renewables. The project cost amounted to about $300 million. The operations building, 16.4 miles of road and 71 wind turbines were built with the help of 250 construction workers. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) estimated that 809 jobs were available during the construction process and another 29 jobs will be created during the operating process of the Rugby project. This estimation was based on NREL’s Jobs and Economic Development Impact model, which takes into consideration the supply chain and other related factors.

Boralex Acquires Three Wind Farms in France

The acquisition of three wind farms in France by Boralex and Cube Infrastructure has resulted in an increase of 170 MW in Boralex’s installed wind power capacity in Europe. Cube Infrastructure Fund is Boralex‘s new European partner. Two of these wind farms are currently under construction. These two wind farms include the 10 MW wind site at Grand Camp in the Centre region and the 30 MW wind site in Plateau de Ronchois in the Picardie and Normandie regions. The 7 MW Bel Air site is the third wind farm, which had started its operation from December 2006 in Brittany.

Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office in Boise Recognized for Reducing its Environmental Impact

An independent group recently recognized the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Regional Office in Boise, Idaho for reducing its impact on the environment. A “gold” rating award was issued for the construction design of the 25,000 square-foot facility by the US Green Building Council. Eric K, Shinseki, Secretary of Veterans Affairs, remarked that the department is involved in taking steps to reduce its environmental impact.

Prokon Places Order for 48 V90-2.0 MW Wind Turbines with Vestas

Vestas has received an order from the German company Prokon for 48 V90-2.0 megawatt wind turbines. These wind turbines are required for various locations in Poland. The contract includes supply of VestaOnline Business SCADA solution, commissioning of the wind turbines, delivery and installation. These 48 V90-2.0 megawatt wind turbines will be delivered during the years 2010 to 2012.

Suzlon Energy Signs Repeat Orders with ITC for the Development of Two Wind Power Projects

Suzlon Energy, the third largest wind turbine maker in the world, has signed repeat orders with ITC for setting up, operating and maintaining two wind power projects in the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The project in Maharashtra will add 6 megawatt of capacity from four units of Suzlon’s S-82 1.5 megawatt turbine and the Karnataka project will add 21 megawatt of capacity from ten units of Suzlon’s S88 – 2.1 megawatt turbine.

New Laser Technology to Increase Electricity Generation in Wind Turbines

A new technology was successfully tested on a wind turbine that increases the electricity generation by Risø DTU. A laser-based anemometer is built into the spinner of the wind turbine and this system predicts the turbulence, direction and gusts of wind. Torben Mikkelsen, Professor at Risø DTU, said that the new technology will enable wind turbines in future to substantially increase energy production. The LIDAR, as the system is called, will also reduce loads significantly.
