CSRS, WPI-ITbM Partner to Promote Interdisciplinary Research Focusing on Synthetic Chemistry, Plant Biology

The RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (CSRS) and Nagoya University’s Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules (WPI-ITbM) have announced that the research centers have entered a collaborative agreement to promote interdisciplinary research, particularly focusing on synthetic chemistry and plant biology. The joint research agreement was signed on January 2015 and is expected to increase the collaboration and accelerate the research between both institutes.

Micro-CT Scans Show Why Making Willow Trees Grow at an Angle Can Improve Biofuel Yields

Imperial researchers have used medical imaging techniques to explore why making willow trees grow at an angle can vastly improve their biofuel yields. Using micro-CT scans, the team showed that the trees respond to being tilted by producing a sugar-rich, gelatinous fibre, which helps them stay upright.

Thermal Hydrolysis of Food Waste May Double Anaerobic Digester Throughput and Reduce Ammonia Concentrations

New research published today (Wednesday 11th March) by AeroThermal Group shows that pre-treating food waste with acombination of steam and pressure, in a machine known as an autoclave, will double the throughput of an anaerobic digester and significantly reduce the amount of ammonia concentrations by denaturing proteins. The trials have been run over 580 days to date.
