Beacon Power Corporation Receives Stimulus Grant from U.S. Government

The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded a $24-million grant to Beacon Power Corporation. The funds are earmarked for the construction of its second flywheel energy storage plant. The 20 MW storage plant will be located in Chicago, Illinois.

Ontario Universities Take Initiatives for Developing a Greener World

Ontario universities have submitted a sustainability pledge to the Ontario government on 26 November, 2009. Through this pledge Ontario universities communicated their commitment in evolving a Greener World in the province, and the environment surrounding them. This intention of making the world a cleaner pace was supported by the Executive Heads of Ontario universities, and also by the Ontario government. Executive Heads of Ontario universities carried out the presentation of this pledge at a reception held at Queens Park.

Canadian Automobile Association Launches Primer on Automobile Fuel Efficiency and Emissions

The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) and Pollution Probe have launched a primer on Automobile Fuel Efficiency and Emissions. Being the first of its kind, this primer focuses on reducing environmental footprint and enables drivers to save fuel by providing them with a list of fuel reduction measures. Technological and driving factors are also imparted to the drivers to educate them on fuel efficiency.

Florian Siegert and His Team Utilize LIDAR Method to Calculate the Volume of Peat Burned in Forest Fires

Peatlands or wetlands in tropical regions remove large amount of organic carbon. But, now-a-days, human activities have an impact on these wetlands. Large-scale fires, triggered by drainage projects in combination with repeated droughts, can release large amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which ultimately leads to global warming. Prof. Florian Siegert and his research group at GeoBio-Center, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat (LMU) have estimated the volume of peat burned in fires with accuracy, with the help of laser-based measurements.
