University of East Anglia Scientists Discover New Technology to Generate Clean Electricity

Scientists at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have developed a novel mechanism that could be used to generate clean electricity from agricultural or domestic waste. Some bacteria survive by ‘breathing rock’ and the researchers have shown for the first time the mechanism by which these bacteria do that. The report was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a leading scientific journal.

Symbios Technologies Helps ZeaChem to Obtain a DOE Grant of $25 million for Constructing its First Cellulosic Biorefinery

Symbios Technologies has played a helping role in enabling ZeaChem to be selected for a grant of $25 million from the Department of Energy (DOE). This award is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and it comes from the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Biomass Program (EERE). Symbios Technologies is a developer of renewable energy projects and ZeaChem is involved in the development of biorefineries that helps in converting renewable biomass into chemicals and fuels. Symbios has been working with ZeaChem through different stages starting from conception to submission to DOE.

SunRun Receives An Additional Commitment of Tax Equity from US Bancorp for Residential Solar Installations

SunRun, a leading provider of home solar power announced that the company has received an extra tax investment from a subsidiary unit of US Bancorp. This extra investment is part of the $90 million that is required for the residential solar installations to be carried out in the year 2010. Northern Power Systems Selects Analog Devices’ SHARC Processors for its Northwind 100 Community-Scale Wind Turbines

Northern Power Systems has selected Analog Devices’ SHARC digital signal processors for use in the company’s Northwind 100 community-scale wind turbines. The Northwind 100 wind turbine utilizes an advanced ‘digital drivetrain’ and the wind turbines are capable of delivering 100 kW of rated power for community-scale wind applications such as municipalities, schools, universities, farms and businesses. By incorporating SHARC digital signal processors, data converters and other ADI components in the Northwind 100’s Permanent Magnet Direct Drive (PMDD) design, the need for a gearbox is eliminated.

Bullis School Dedicates Solar Electric Power System

Bullis School dedicated the largest solar electric power system at a ceremony held at a private school in the DC area. Students, school administrators, federal and state legislators attended the ceremony. This system is owned and operated by Washington Gas Energy Services (WGES). The solar system was installed by Clean Currents Solar and it will provide electricity to Bullis School’s Blair Family Center for the Arts.

Solar Lighting International offers the X-Series wind outdoor lighting system that incorporates a small wind turbine. The rotor diameter of the wind turbine is 46 inches. The wind powered light needs a wind speed of 12 miles per hour for operation. At a wind speed of 28 miles per hour, the wind turbine provides a rated power of 400 watts. For one month, the wind turbine offers 38 kilowatt hours at a wind speed of 12 miles per hour.
